Taurus Solar Eclipse: Pennies From Heaven

Oh every time it rains, it rains pennies from heaven
Don’t you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven…
~ From “Pennies from Heaven,” by Johnny Burke and Arthur Johnston

This New Moon’s Solar Eclipse in Taurus is in a close conjunction with Uranus. Eclipses are unstable times at best, and Uranus is a bit of wildcard; so this eclipse is made for breaking up old, stagnant routines and opening the pathway to new growth.

If you’ve found yourself in a rut, this wake-up call will be welcome. Humans prefer safety and predictability, but we need a healthy balance of stability and unpredictability. When things become too safe, it’s easy to get bored, lazy, and a little bit grumpy. Eclipses seem to catalyze the sort of scary change that we both need and dread, and it’s often the kind of change that, in hindsight, seems to have been inevitable.

Jupiter, the “Great Benefic,” has been making itself felt in recent weeks, too, making a conjunction with Neptune on April 12, with both joined by Venus at this eclipse. When Jupiter is involved, it’s as though someone “up there” is looking out for us. There is a fable that maintains that when you find a penny, it was left in your path by someone who is looking out for you from heaven. Whether you believe that or not, it does seem true that even small blessings can eventually add up to something quite wonderful, regardless of their provenance. A Taurus friend of mine saves every bit of loose change she finds on the street. After many years of collecting coins, she had enough to fill a glass jar almost as tall as she was. She rolled up the coins, took them to the bank, and emerged with enough cash to rent a limousine for the night and treat several of her favorite people to dinner at a fabulous restaurant!

Of course, actual coins are not the only “pennies from heaven” that come our way. Small kindnesses compound as well, though we might notice and appreciate them more if they were made of metal. I’ve been realizing lately that I’m too quick to take criticism to heart and too slow to release it, saving up the toxic coins of negativity; instead, I should get in the habit of focusing on the many lovely emails or friendly comments that come my way. Maybe I’ll print those “pennies” out on tiny slips of paper and drop them into a big, glass jar. The bank won’t give me much for them, but they could certainly make me feel better on a day when I’ve fielded a complaint or two.

The most recent eclipses near this degree of Taurus occurred on April 29, 2014, and April 29, 1995. The most recent eclipses near this degree of Taurus occurred on April 29, 2014, and April 29, 1995. What did your life look like then? Looking back, you may find similarities to the new beginnings, instability, and opportunity you face today.

Eclipses, particularly those in Taurus, present us with a challenge: take steps to get out of your rut willingly, or get unceremoniously kicked to the curb. At this New Moon Solar Eclipse, think about where your life may have grown stale; the house of your birth chart which contains 10º Taurus provides clues. (Don’t know how to find it? This blog post might help.) If you know in your heart what you need to do, then take a step, however modest, in that direction. It’s a lot better than ending up sitting on a cold, hard curb. You might even find a few shiny pennies along the way.
