A Pig That Builds from Bricks
The week begins with a formidable Mars/Pluto square (May 25, 2026, 9:02 pm PDT, 5º25’ Taurus and Aquarius). Mars is insistent and impatient. It’s the big, bad wolf from the Three Little Pigs fairy tale, determined to have what it wants – and that’s pork barbeque for dinner.
The pigs build houses to protect themselves from the wolf. The first pig builds his from straw; the wolf huffs and puffs and blows it down. The second builds a house of sticks, and the wolf makes short work of that one, too. But the third pig builds a house made solidly of bricks, and the wolf is out of luck.
Pluto is a pig that builds from bricks. There is no penetrating its house. The harder we push and the stronger we blow, the less impressed is Pluto. And so, this is not the best week for pushing an individual agenda. But we forget sometimes that we own the Pluto in our charts. It’s not just the planet that resists our determined advances. It’s also the fortress, the power place within ourselves that we can retreat to when we feel attacked.
Being a Passenger
Each year, when the Sun is in Gemini, the sign of the short-distance traveler, I find myself itching to take a road trip. It was our family tradition to spend late-60’s summers traveling to visit family in Los Angeles in an Oldsmobile station wagon.
I loved those trips, jostling along the open road for days at a time. What luxury, to spend days in that snug, automotive womb with nothing to do but read comic books and watch the landscape change across the miles. When you’re young, you instinctively feel safe with someone else behind the wheel. All you have to do is sit back and entertain yourself while the world drifts by, filling you with a sense of adventure and endless possibilities as wide as the big desert sky.
In 1971, almost exactly one year after my father died in a car accident, my mother, my siblings, and I set out to leave the place where all of us were born and raised, to live in California. This time, Mom had to handle the driving chores alone, and often grew tired; I remember one witheringly hot afternoon nap under a freeway overpass in the middle of nowhere, when we miraculously woke up just as a creepy looking stranger was approaching our car. The sense of adventure and wide-open spaces had given way to an unsettling awareness of our vulnerability.
This week, the Sun trines Pluto (May 26, 2026, 8:53 am PDT, at 5º25’ Gemini and Aquarius) and brushes up against the shadow side of the open road. It’s not just menacing strangers in the shadows; it’s also the uneasiness we can feel, as adults, with giving over control to another driver. As this Sun in Gemini season gets underway, Pluto is behind the wheel. We may be eager to hit the road, but it’s not necessarily all that comfortable being a passenger instead of a driver.
What’s Worth It?
When everything we desire seems to have been denied us, we can either give up, try harder, or let it go. Sometimes, we’ve been wishing for the wrong things, and the universe holds up a stop sign for our own protection. Other times, the approach we’re taking is wrong, or the timing is off.
As Venus squares Saturn (May 28, 2026, 8:02 pm PDT) in steadfast Cancer and determined Aries, the desire for a home filled with comfy adornments clashes with a desire for minimalism. Anything we decide we want, says Saturn, had better be worth the hard work it will take to get it – and whatever we might have to let go of in order to make room for it.
What are your most valued possessions? Do they provide essential beauty, comfort, and inspiration, or simply take up space? This week, some things might have to go. So keep your eyes open for ideas, opportunities, and invitations to use your beloved gifts to improve the world, and to open up space for something new and exciting.
Is This Enough?
Sagittarius is the “Big Picture” sign, and Full Moons shine a bright, sometimes unforgiving light on an area of our lives. Not surprisingly, the Sagittarius Full Moon (May 31, 2026, 1:45 pm PDT, at 9º55’ Sagittarius and Gemini) demands an honest answer to a big question: “Is this enough?” And with the Sun and Moon both in aspect to Uranus in Gemini, this question contains another, nested within it like a Matryoshka doll: “Are you willing to make the changes that are required to make your life bigger?”
Each Full Moon represents the culmination of three, nested lunar cycles. The first cycle began at the most recent New Moon – in this case, the May 16 New Moon at 25º57′ Taurus, which asked: What do you need to feel secure? The second cycle began at the Dec. 19, 2025 Sagittarius New Moon, and this Full Moon is the “response” to that New Moon’s “call” for something more. And the third cycle began at the previous New Moon close to this Full Moon degree – on Nov. 30, 2024 (9º32′ Sagittarius). We’re now at the midpoint of a story that began at that New Moon, and it’s a story about your desire for a bigger, freer life.
So, is there a part of your life that you’ve outgrown? How free do you feel? Is this enough? And what are you willing to do to make it even better?
