Make the earth ready
Mars leaves Aries this week for the more measured pace and relaxed pastures of Taurus (May 18, 2026, 3:25 pm PDT). It’s true that Mars struggles a bit in this Venus-ruled sign, so antithetical to its nature. The fixed nature of Taurus slows Mars down, which can be frustrating, and its desire for pleasure and relaxation can be distracting. But it’s also a stabilizing influence, and this could be a time we start to get some traction on the ideas and projects we’ve been thinking about since April 9, when Mars entered Aries.
Imagine an ox methodically pulling a plow, making the earth ready to receive seeds. What Mars in Taurus lacks in speed, it makes up for in tenacity, patience, and joy in the effort of physical exertion. Enjoy its languid pace until June 28.

Clearing the Air
I hate to shop – with one exception: I love buying nice things for my house. I was born with Venus in Cancer, the sign of home, and it’s my happy place. I’m never happier than when I’m painting a wall, evaluating a throw pillow, or cooking dinner for friends.
Venus symbolizes pleasure and harmony, and this week it enters the sign of Cancer (May 18, 2026, 6:05 pm PDT, until June 13). Times are challenging, and we may feel that the comfort of home is on the verge of slipping away. We may worry about keeping our homes filled with necessities, and miss having our friends over for parties.
Most worryingly, we may be at odds and out of sync with the people closest to us, including those under our roofs. As Venus begins its Cancer journey this week, it makes contentious squares to Neptune (May 21) and the North Node (May 22), followed by a square to Saturn next week. This could bring a tug-of-war of negotiating terms and seeking common ground. So, break out the smudge wand and candles. In the end, we may or may not be in agreement – but at least we’ll have cleared the air.

Soulful Intention and Practical Efficiency
Let’s say you want to build something that’s unique and visionary, as many of us do. It can feel overwhelming to tackle it all at once; we can be daunted by our own vision. But Venus in Cancer is a gentle incubator and Mars in Taurus is a practical organizer, and as they meet in a bright sextile aspect this week (May 18, 2026, 10:37 pm PDT, 00º Cancer-Taurus), we can frame a house, draft a book, sketch a garden design, or make a dent in anything else we’ve been wanting to do – maybe not at top speed, but with soulful intention and practical efficiency.
This is a sexy combination, too, and might even bring a little romance into a committed, long-term relationship. It’s a good time to plan a romantic getaway, even if it’s just a special dinner out.

Create a New Story
The Gemini season begins in earnest this week as the Sun enters Gemini (May 20, 2026, 5:37 pm PDT, until June 1). It’s a social season, a time to gather with friends and consider the usual summer getaways. It’s Gemini’s job to connect people and their ideas with one another, and at this time of year the mild weather and natural beauty draw us outdoors as surely as a spring flower attracts bees.
Each year, when the Sun enters Gemini, we embark on a metaphorical road trip, and the destination is entirely beside the point. Gemini’s season is geared toward the process rather than a particular outcome. It’s the season of summer camp and internships and backpacking across Europe, and long drives across desolate highways, where there is nothing but room—room to be someone different for a while, to let your imagination breathe, and to create a new story for yourself.

Teaching Each Other How to Lie
Esteemed astro-Yoda Steven Forrest once observed that, “We get married, and then set to work teaching each other how to lie.” That’s keenly observed, and it has the sting of truth. But it’s difficult to deal with unvarnished candor on a 24-hour basis, and in a long-term relationship, untruths are sometimes kind. A little gentleness allows affection to endure.
But there are kind untruths (“No, that dress doesn’t make you look fat”) and then there is flat-out deception. And as Venus squares Neptune (May 21, 2026, 11:32 pm PDT, 3º51’ Cancer-Aries), we can get a good look at what is really going on – in relationships, with money, in the way we value ourselves – and where we go from here.

Get Ready for Your Closeup!
Actor Bryan Cranston had built a fine career as a character actor, but he wasn’t exactly a household name. Then, in 2007, he landed the role of a lifetime. On January 20, 2008, the television series Breaking Bad debuted with Cranston in the lead role of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who turns to making methamphetamine after a cancer diagnosis. At the time, transiting Uranus was making a conjunction to Cranston’s natal Sun.
The show became a phenomenon, and Cranston won 4 Emmy awards for the role. Always a respected journeyman actor, he was now, at age 51, a bona fide star.
Picture Uranus as an antenna, channeling signals; and when it comes together with the Sun, a lot of high-wattage attention is focused in one place.
The annual conjunction of the Sun and Uranus (May 22, 2026, 7:26 am PDT, 1º30’ PDT) is a very quick transit with only a few days of influence. But if something in your birth chart resonates with that degree, this transit can open the portal to a potent moment in the spotlight. Get ready for your closeup!
Keep Your Promise
The Sun and Moon are both in Mercury-ruled signs at the Virgo First Quarter (May 23, 2026, 4:11 am, 02º20′ Virgo-Gemini), and this is often the time of year when my work slows down a bit and my thoughts turn to cleaning house and clearing clutter. I imagine I’ll get to that sometime this week; my fingers are itching for the pruning shears. But Mercury is sextile Saturn, slowing me down a little bit – in a good way.
This First Quarter Moon calls back to the Virgo New Moon on Aug. 22, 2025, at 0º23’ Virgo. At this First Quarter Moon, near that same degree of Virgo, it’s time to take a minute, take stock, and take practical action toward that New Moon’s insights and plans.
What did that Virgo New Moon time look like for you? Particularly if there’s something in your birth chart near this First Quarter degree of Virgo (or Gemini, Sagittarius, or Pisces), try to remember what you might have whispered to yourself then, at some critical moment. It was a little promise you made to yourself, and now’s the time to do something – anything – to keep that promise.
Let Possibilities Come to You
Sometimes, a good, solid nap is just what you need to refuel your mind, spirit, and creative juices. A lunch break overlooking the ocean or a lake, or in the company of a good book, can do the same. Do it for the right amount of time – not too much! – and you’ll be refreshed and productive for the remainder of the day.
As the Sun in restless, variety-love Gemini sextiles Neptune in hard-driving Aries (May 24, 2026, 7:22 pm PDT, 3º55’ Gemini-Aries), remember that slowing down from your hectic, scattered schedule can make you more productive in the end – and certainly, more at peace. Forget the flurry of tasks for a moment, and be reunited with the story you’re trying to tell with your life. Look to Neptune’s placement in the Aries house of your chart to locate that narrative, and the Gemini house to see what you’ll use to tell it. This week is filled with creative possibilities – but you must take time out to let them come to you.
